In a good relationship, both parties really get to know one another. What’s the other person’s story? What do they value? What do they prioritize? What are they proud of? With the fast-paced nature of our work, we now it’s hard to make deep connections. However, it’s important for our clients and candidates to know our Consultis team members before we swim into new waters in search of the right solution for your goals. And this time, we’re taking a Deep Dive with Alexa “MonsterFISH” Berrios, Talent Manager at our Orlando office.
1. Briefly describe your Consultis journey.
In October 2016, my best friend referred me to the Consultis team. When I started, I had some recruiting experience (agency and internal) and no IT recruiting experience, but I’ve thrived and, since then, I am now working with an entirely new team (except for one J). One thing that has been constant in my time at Consultis is change: change in the roles we’re recruiting for, change on our team, change in our own abilities. There are no boundaries. It keeps my position exciting and not stagnant.
2. What do you love most about your job?
I love learning about people. I like to hear their journey. How did they get to where they are? How did someone go from getting a degree in microbiology to being a SQL guru? More importantly, I love helping them get to where they want to go. That has to be the most rewarding and fulfilling part of all.
3. What is your favorite thing to do in Orlando?
My dad has worked at Disney since he was 18, so the Disney theme parks were essentially my backyard playground growing up and that hasn’t changed! Now I take my daughter to Disney any time we have the chance. I also love being on or near the water, whether it’s the beach, springs, rivers, intracoastal waterways, or the pool!
4. What is your top piece of advice for clients, candidates, or those who are new to the staffing industry?
For those new to staffing, I think you have to go into it without expecting to become a recruiter or an account manager. I’m good at my job, but we could have a position come in today that I’ve never recruited for and I would be starting from square one. Especially in tech recruiting, it’s easy to get caught up in the tech side of it all and you should! Embrace all of the market and position info you seek out and receive, but don’t let it define you as a recruiter. Being genuinely good at your job, being passionate, thorough, and going above and beyond all the rest is what will set you apart and define your success.
5. What has been your proudest moment at Consultis?
I always say that my favorite part about my job is helping people. Usually I am helping people improve something about their current employment situation, go from being unemployed to employed, or take the next step in their career. However, one partnership sticks out. Last year, I had been working with a candidate who was looking to relocate from Puerto Rico to Orlando, FL. We got him engaged in an opportunity with one of our clients, and throughout the interview process Hurricane Maria hit and devastated Puerto Rico. We had extremely limited communication and, at that point, I was more concerned with connecting with him to make sure that he and his family were okay. Though his home and many of belongings were not, he and his family weathered the storm safely. He ended up getting the job, was able to take one of the first flights out to start his new role in Florida, and his family followed a week or so after. The company even gave him an extra week of PTO to get everything in order following the storm.
6. One piece of life or career advice I’d give to a mentee:
Do things with passion. If you can’t, don’t do them.
